Do I need building experience to volunteer on a construction site?
No prior construction experience is required to work on any
day. We believe working on site can provide a valuable learning
experience for those seeking basic building skills.
What are the hours on a construction site?
The workday starts at 8:45 am and typically lasts until 1:30
pm. Volunteers need to arrive at the worksite by 8:45 am. It
is critical for volunteers to arrive on time! Late arrivals
may cause delays in the start of the safety overview, instruction
and work assignments, thus delaying the overall construction
schedule. Without instruction and task assignments, late arrivals
may be asked to leave.
What should I wear to the construction site?
Wear sturdy shoes and clothes you don't mind getting very dirty.
We suggest work/hiking boots, jeans, a t-shirt and possibly
a sweatshirt. Also be aware that much of the work is outdoors,
so dress appropriately for the weather, including light rain.
What should I bring to the construction site? Should
I bring tools?
We recommend that volunteers bring a brown bag lunch and water.
In terms of tools, TMHH provides the basic tools and power tools
you will be using. You may bring your own basic tools if you
like, but be sure to label them well with your name. We also
recommend volunteers to bring safety items if they have them,
such as protective eyewear, work gloves and a hard hat.
What if it is raining?
Depending on the state of the site (is there a roof?), construction
may continue during rain showers, per the discretion of the
site supervisor. If it is raining, we will try to call you the
morning of your workday if we need to close the site. You can
also call the construction supervisor to see if the site is
open. You will receive contact numbers after you have signed
up.
Everyone must sign the Volunteer Waiver and Release
Form
each work day before they are allowed to begin work. TMHH is
required to have record of your participation for legal, insurance,
and statistical purposes. Upon arrival, volunteers will begin
safety instruction and receive work assignments from the site
supervisor.
